This figure illustration was created for a paper by Dr. Alexa Semonche in the department of Neurosurgery at the University of California, San Francisco. It is meant to show different muscle assessments to determine if a patient with a spinal deformity also has sarcopenia (muscle loss due to aging/immobility). Ultimately, these tests will determine if it is unsafe to conduct surgery.
